as at May 26 - we are mid-way through following the next Key of Kagrash to Minas Emras, basically to loot the place :) Our ultimate intent is to aim for the old halls of Kaled Zem via Minas Emras. The Dwarven portion of the Ring of Air is more likely to be under Kaled Zem than in Minas Emras. Also see note below on the gate in Emras. Old Kaled Zem was originally Gnomish and then expanded by the Dwarves pre-First Age and early-First Age. This could make it tricky to follow the clues that lead to 'zeroeth age' Kaled Zem (post-Gnomes and pre-First Age).

At the end of the May 26 weekend, we were climbing a snaking path up a saddle in the mountains near Alon. The path is heavily used durign the day by organised forces that we assume are hostile (everyone is!); however, it is not used at night due to the emergence of monsters when the sun goes down, making it an ideal time for us to try and use it! When we reach the top, we may find it is blocked and/or be guarded. Regardless, we need to start heading for Emras - turning East/North-East. At the point we stopped, Laas Xan was the only one who remained on the Border Ethereal, with everybody else back on the Prime (including Akumi).

NOTE: the lack of active AIR influence in the region suggests that the natural gate to the Plane of Air (in Emras) may be held against them or blocked/closed in some way. We need to check and open the AIR gate if possible. It is most likely held by Earth and or Water but possibly by the undead.

NOTE: Hidami learned from her grandmother that artefacts can be destroyed in 'Orodruin's fire' - the volcano near Sutur that was used to create them.

This is the exact same software as wikipedia use, so if you can use that font of all knowledge then you can use this one...

To find information, just start with the search box at the top of the page

To add a new page just type the name into the search box; if the system can't find what you want already then it will offer you the chance to create it.
This is where Dispater first emerged which suggests that deep under the mountains is/was an ancient connection to the depths of the underworld. That connection would have relied on the Astral and could be a good source of more Astral Essence.

Kaled Zem is an ancient place, much of the history is pre First Age - making it highly relevant for a world that has reset to zero. This is based on the fact that the Dwarves were already in Kaled Zem when the human-centric First Age started recording history. They were there for 500 years before Lastar was even born.

First Age

0-100	The reign of the Elves is confined to Vikriain and the Silven Lands. The Dwarven Lands comprise a series of mountain ranges which bordered the Elven realms; these mountains run southwards from Fangor Rodrus to Findor and encompass Kaled Zem, Balem and Hama’Las.

500	Lastar and The rise of Dispater. Lastar is born to a Half-elf woman (Sylvan) and a man called Eorand. The Dwarves of Kaled Zem unearth a great evil power - Dispater. The Devil unites the races of evil that inhabit the Forgotten Lands, east of the Dwarven mountains.

525	The Rise of Orcus; The Elven Gems and Bavarik. A new evil, a Demon named Orcus, rises from the Abyss and attacks the Dwarves from the North East, flattening the mountain range between Fangor Rodrus and Kaled Zem. Elves enter the battle under Lastar’s command and use their magical gems against Orcus’ army. The gems belong to the following Elves: Gelmir of the Silven Lands, Aerandir of Numenorea, Nenya of the Old Forest and Elwe of Lorial. Bavarik of Arogan is born in Gos.

535	The Rise of Demogorgan. Not yet at full strength, this young Demon visits the Prime Material Plane for the first time. Unwisely, Demogorgan stretches his forces attacking the Elves to the South of Kaled Zem, Orcus to the south east of Fangor Rodrus and the Dwarves east of Balem Lakes.

557	Minas Maedus and Minas Emras complete. The House of Rodrus is built and ruled by Maedus. The House of Zem comes to power at Minas Emras.

557	The Elemental Rings. The Rings of Power and the Elven Gems are united by Dwarven craftsmen. Lastar gives each Ring elemental powers. Hamar (living in Minas Aarda) receives the Ring of Earth. Zem (living in Minas Emras) receives the Ring of Air. Ishtur (living in Minas Morgul) receives the Ring of Fire. Dor (living in Minas Tiris) receives the Ring of Water.

557-560	Men and Dwarves build Sutur. Orodruin’s kindred move to the west of Kaled Zem. Whilst this depletes the force holding Minas Maedus, Lastar promises them help if they build a large tower and keep to protect Kaled Zem.

Second Age

671	Demogorgan Returns - A vast army of evil is arrayed on the waste lands of Amras Aarda. Findor is attacked from the south and boats land in the Bay of Ashore. A large force of strange creatures never seen before march through the gap between Fangor Rodrus and Kaled Zem, on the Planes of Eriador.

732	The Fall of Minas Aarda - Despite the aid sent from Balem and Kaled Zem, the noble house of Hamar crumbles as Demogorgan grows in might. Hamar, Lord of Aarda, dies during the battle. Demogorgan takes his Palantir but overlooks his Ring.

780	The 5th Crown and Balor - The Crown lay hidden at the foot of a large waterfall that fell out of Kaled Zem into the Old Forest. Here Kallon, a Half-Elf of the Dunedain, found it whilst he recovered from a long pursuit of a band of Orcs. Kallon was caught between breaking off his hunt to head towards Sutur to learn more about the Crown and finding the hiding place of the cursed Orcs. Unfortunately he chose poorly, deciding to chase the Orc band back to their home. As he entered an old dwarven hall he was surprised by Balor. Balor was the servant of Demogorgon who had slowly discovered many of the dwarrowdelfs in Kaled Zem. He recognised the Crown immediately and slew Kallon for it.

824	The Gem of Law - Deep within the ancient halls of Kaled Zem Balor discovers the Gem of Law. Not in the least bit aligned with the Gem, Balor is torn between hiding it and declaring it to his master. Believing that he may somehow master its power, Balor hides the Gem and builds even greater protection around it.

Fourth Age

(60) 905	The Flight - Lastar’s Claw - All forces for good are routed and return to their homes. However, the dwarves of Zem fight valiantly for their Queen, Mala, and cling on to their old halls in Kaled Zem. As they withdraw deep into Zem, Mala discovers the Eagle’s Claw – the headpiece to Lastar’s Staff.

(65) 910	Dordraug Kills Garag and takes the Ring of Air - After the failed siege of Minas Aarda, Garag returns to Kaled Zem. However, Dordraug manages to penetrate the dwarfs’ defences and kills Garag, taking up his Ring. The dwarves retreat to Emras again.

(83) 928	Death of Imrahir - The Efreet Hearth - Coming unobserved over the top of Malek, Dordraug’s forces kill and capture many of Orodruin’s Folk and seize the Efreet Hearth, cutting off Imrahir’s supply routes and stopping the Castellan from returning to Sutur. Dordraug discovers Mariku amongst the Dwarves and tortures her. However, she says little of what she knows and the evil Mage is content with the knowledge that more of Lastar’s artefacts have fallen into his possession. He sends Mariku to a prison deep within Kaled Zem. Dordraug eventually surrounds Sutur and, caught in the open, Imrahir is engulfed by the enemy before he can reach the safety of the Castle’s walls. His depleted forces struggle to cope with Dordraug’s vast army. Imrahir is killed by Dordraug; however, the Mage is unable to seize any of Lastar’s artefacts, which are recovered by Grobdûr, Kûlar’s oldest son, and returned to Minas Maedus.

(87) 932	Under Mala, the dwarves from the House of Zem take back their halls in the mts of Kaled Zem and fortify their southern borders against Dordraug.

Ynis's Death seen in a vision...

Lanzi is scared even before he is awake. Having opened the mighty door he is stunned by what he finds. Orcus stands before them and all seems lost. The shock is felt before Lanzi sees any movement – Orcus’s great hand grabs Ynis by the throat and hurls him upwards. Lanzi too has been launched and, rotating slowly end over end, he occasionally views the battle scene below. The Tana’Ri are routing men, elves and dwarves; however, Lanzi is most struck by the image of Ynis: once a beautiful half-elf, head ripped off and lifeless body cart wheeling across the room. Later Lanzi comes to, head still reeling, alone, petrified and with a booming voice in his ears, “Once again you honour me, we shall have complete control before this age is done.” “My Lord, it is by your grace that I have sufficient power to be of what little use I am.” Looking up, Lanzi can see the profile of a young man, dressed in a brown cloak, handsome and with neatly trimmed beard and moustache. The man addresses Orcus, (although the Demon is out of sight), “I believe that they will flee along the old paths in Kaled Zem; they will not get far.” “Good!” Exclaims the Demon, “Take this with you on your journey; I believe it to have once belonged to our most hated enemy.”

The Price of Diplomacy
I surged into the melee, my blade singing for Queen Inwe. I wanted these surface-dwellers to see Githyanki steel in their defense before we spoke. We cut down the remaining hobgoblins with practiced efficiency. When the last fell, I sheathed my sword and offered parley.

It was a hollow gesture. They wanted the Crown of Positivity back—a relic they claimed as their own. I sensed the tension and whispered a warning to Qenthal. Diplomacy failed the moment the Drow’s blood rose; she put an arrow through a dwarf’s chest before I could blink. A frantic battle erupted. Qenthal was a whirlwind of steel, decapitating a foe even as she impaled him. She chased their mage up the stairs, her cry of triumph echoing as she struck him down.

In the aftermath, a newcomer emerged from the shadows: Akumi Embercoil. She recognized my heritage instantly, a being of fire-plane essence with the faint hum of the Astral in her soul. She pledged her service to the "Star Lord," provided our paths aligned. To secure the Crown from those who would hunt us for it, she performed a ritual, sending it to another plane for safekeeping.

Qenthal, meanwhile, had looted the bodies and found the prize: two heavy black keys, etched with the runes for Olga and Emras. The "Keys of Kagrash" were no longer a myth.

The Border Ethereal and the Goat-Dwarf
We could not stay in the Dwarven halls forever. Water was running low, and the fortress felt increasingly like a tomb. Qenthal guided us to a room of pale stone where the veil between worlds was thin. We stepped through an Ethereal Gate, leaving the Prime Material behind for a corridor of swirling grey mist.

Our passage was blocked by a nightmare: a stretched, goat-like dwarf wielding a massive axe. I shouted a challenge and charged. The creature was unnervingly resilient, its skin like toughened leather, but Qenthal paralyzed it with a scroll’s dweomer. Hidami (Akumi’s lizard-form proxy) and Qenthal tore into it until it dissolved into the mist.

We used this ghostly vantage point to bypass the solid rock of the mountain, finally emerging back onto the Prime. We stood upon a mountain ridge overlooking a vast marsh. As the sun hit us, Qenthal hissed—the Drow do not care for the day—and she cloaked us in a magical shroud of darkness as we descended.

Horrors of the Marsh and the Giant
The trek through the marsh was grueling. We fended off a pack of giant lizards that surged from the muck. During the fray, Sinigawa’s familiar, Mau, shifted into a formidable wolf form. We were battered and weary, finding brief respite in the shadow of the Old Forest.

There, we encountered a twelve-foot giant perched on a rock, gnawing on something bloody, a spiked club at its side. It nearly ended Hidami with a single hurled boulder. Qenthal’s quick thinking—a mesmerizing display of colored lights—bought us the seconds we needed. We struck as one, Qenthal’s ice bolts and our blades finally bringing the titan down.

Further north, we intercepted a raiding party holding prisoners from the House of Nenya. We slaughtered the captors, rescuing the elves and claiming their mithril hauberks and fine daggers. Most importantly, we found a third Key of Kagrash, marked with a circle-and-dot rune. To honor our Queen, I performed the rite to send the fallen enemies' bodies to the Astral Sea.

The Vault of Hamar and the Magma Rebirth
Following the pull of the keys, we bypassed a massive stronghold of Gnolls by moving invisibly and scaling a sheer cliff face. At the base of a great boulder, the key pulsed. A hidden door ground open.

Inside, we found a chamber bathed in an eerie green glow. A massive pentagram dominated the floor, surrounded by the runes of the five elemental seats. A relief on the wall depicted a great battle where dwarves crushed their enemies beneath crumbling mountains.

"Focus on the dwarf," I commanded. "What would a child of the stone do?"

Hidami understood. He channeled elemental earth into the ring of the depicted Dwarf Lord, and the wall receded to reveal a descending stair. At the bottom, we faced a Stone Golem in the likeness of a giant dwarf. We bypassed the guardian by solving the celestial puzzle of the Sun and Moon on the wall, descending further into the heart of the world.

There, we found the Statue of Yagrik, the Great Creator. Upon an anvil sat a ring: Felakgundu, the Earth Mover.

Hidami reached for it. The moment he slid it onto his finger, he was engulfed in white-hot flames. His flesh burned away to ash, only to reveal a body of basalt and flowing magma. He emerged as Yogan-ishi, an eight-foot-tall titan of volcanic power. He knelt before me, renewing his vow of loyalty.

The Hall of Legends
We reached the final sanctum—a hall of breath-taking beauty. Ornate murals covered every inch:

Fenris leaping from the doors.

The dark shadow of Dispater being cut down by a paladin.

The Mage in White wielding a staff with four elemental rings.

A magical discharge crackled through the air as I placed a gem into the empty staff of a carved figure. The ancient mechanisms of the 1st Age groaned into life one last time. The final door began to open, smelling of ozone and antiquity.

The Ashfall Convergence was a long prophesised celestial event which saw the Plane of Fire align with the Material Plane, causing volcanic eruptions across worlds. The collision took place at the ancient fire gate on the Prime, at what was known as Tiris, and the Molten Spire on the Plane of Fire. It is widely believed that the Evil Norse Gods willed the collision so as to free the undead fire serpent from its imprisonment, allowing it to enter the great war. Rantor, once of Fire, took to the Astral to battle Thor in the final cataclysmic engagement that engulfed all planes. Once the great wyrm was free, the Plane of Fire sprang back from the Prime, enabling Tiris to erupt, throwing ash into the Prime’s skies and covering much of the north in thick layers of dust and ash. When the rift to the Material Plane opened near the Molten Spire, some Yuan-To seized the chance to cross over. Hidami believes they have made a home in the lava flows of Tiris, revelling in the power of both worlds.

When the Astral pathway collapsed, as result of Ragnarök, all powers involved in the fierce fighting were annihilated, including the Dragon. The Astral umbilical cord was broken, and the Planes were cut off from the Prime. Worst for all worlds beyond the Prime, was the fact that Astral essence – the building blocks of all Planes - was dispersed. It became a hugely sought-after and fought over material. Fighting between Inner Plane dwellers became more about access to Astral Essence than about their natural enmity (based on opposing elemental origins).
