Hunters Turned Hunted
I called Grelt close and set about trying to convince him of the danger I knew we faced ahead. In the end he agreed to my plan to set an ambush for the ambushers on the basis that if there was a foe then I was right, and if not then I was mad! We made our way up to slope with a little difficulty and then tracking along the contours until we reached a position above the ambush site that I remembered. We stopped and dismounted, as I wanted to observe and not be seen until I knew that the foe was in place. Thankfully I was proven not to be mad, as the Kharash arrived and began to set up the ambush. I pulled back out of sight and gathered our small force, ordering a charge into the foe and to maintain the pressure so that they could not regroup and organise a defence as they had the advantage of numbers.
They were taken by surprise and scattered as we bore quickly down on them, one falling to his death as my halberd lifted him from the rocks. We gave chase and I was grateful to see Fulgar calling to me as we crested a spur on the mountain side. Grelt looked ashen-faced at the sight of the wolf-man closing with us, and I yelled that Fulgar was a friend and to leave him alone. Fulgar asked if we were attacking or fleeing, and I urged him to join us in harrying the foe before they realised how few we were. At that he charged into them and literally ripped one apart! I later learned that Fulgar had spoken to his father about the threat and had been heeded; he had directed them to the sacred valley and they were amassing their pack, but had warned them to stay away from the Githyanki due to the power of their minds and their ability to strike down warriors without fighting.
Fulgar reaches the valley with the pack gathering, and see the people with offerings so still alive. Gather on valley side above it as Fulgar goes to find me.
Continue charge and skewer two more between us. I ride into the rear but urge Grelt back. Fulgar hit by one but slashes him twice and rolls down hill dead.
Garuk and his warband approach from the other side. Fulgar strikes again. Mardhan looses magic missiles at Fulgar's foe, killing it.
A monk dies fighting and Fulgar stabbed again. I was stabbed but managed to keep my seat.
Garuk knows that a leader was chosen to get him on the inside (to be captured) to understand the Githyanki intent - he now does, so no lives need be lost. Tries to convince leader of why he was chosen.
Garuk has to convince his people from the raiding party of the danger.
Githzerai join the fight from their rear. Garuk cuts one in half from top to bottom. Fulgar slashed another one and then disembowled him.
Fulgar eats - blood splattered. More magic missiles from Mardhan into one of my attackers. My mates finally finish off lone Kharash round the corner.
Garuk kills another. Fulgar rips heart out "Shang-Ti in your honour we kill those that don't follow the way" and eats it.
Mardhan shouts to surrender or die, and they throw down weapons and go to knees.
Fulgar warns that warband moves towards valley - tell him to go to his pack and we will follow as quickly as we can. He changes to wolf. Tell Grelt to take tiger back and keep her safe.
I take Mardhan on horse to valley floor and he dismounts to throw a fireball into the enemy troops, leaving only 4 still coming out of the score there were! They are not a threat, so continue up to valley ridge where Mardhan wanted to rally his band.
Another warband to our left, so drop him off and spur horse to charge them. Mardhan conjures strands of thick web, trapping 4 of them.
I charge, skewering one and charging past shouting beware the Kharash are here, for Shang-Ti!
Garuk restores his mind with a scroll. I am hit with an arrow - starting to respond. Wheel and kill another but unhorsed.
Hengeyokai join us and Fulgar makes the first call. I get to feet and leap into saddle again, ride up and down saying "Shang-Ti protects! The Kharash cowards would attack the innocent, defeat them!", dstrike one although it doesn't fall. Garuk fells one.
I finish my opponent. I was joined by Fulgar and another one went down between our blows, then Fulgar ripped another one's throat open.
Garuk killed one too, with his warband doing some damage too. I rode around and thrust my halberd into another, and he fell. They were about halved in number now.
Fulgar was amongst them now, ripping one apart from behind as his pack did the same from the front. The ones left alive threw down their weapons and surrendered.
The pack started feeding gruesomely.
Look across valley and see Kharash and Gith riding down into people, so set off to try to reach leaders with Garuk holding on desperately. Intercepted so strike one as he glances on me, then carry on.
Fulgar worried about mind so stays back. I charge past once it is safe to spur the horse on towards their leaders at the back. People are being slaughtered but there's nothing I can do with just two of us - maybe attacking the leaders will draw some off?
Fulgar moves along the ridge, still wary of Gith and their mental assaults.
I spear enemy leader (I hope) and he dies, driven off horse. I took a solid hit in return, though. Rein horse in shouting at Garuk to dismount if he wanted to, turning towards Gith but he is riding away!
Garuk jumps back up awkwardly. His people are moving slowly down and attacking with their minds.
I catch the Gith and strike at him, he turns and hits Garuk instead! A mental battle goes on between them. We chase him to the caves in the valley and he disappears inside the central one.
Fail to find an offering to Shang-Ti, despite having the fire mouse. Get a dangerous sense of foreboding. Have to ride off in search of an offering, riding through the slaughter. Too early for the offerings to be there.
Strike off NE to try and get ahead of the slaughter and turn people back before its too late. Cannot face them in open battle.
Ride hard and reach first nobles with troops muster some defenders, about a dozen, and charge to slow down the enemy. I kill their magic user but just too late as a fireball explodes in amongst the troops. Five fall, along with a couple of foe.
Garuk severely hurt. Killed a few more, but needed to get Garuk and unseated riders out of there.
Managed to get Garuk and one other out but so badly damaged that we have to withdraw. Ride hard away and veer off the path to try to draw them away.
