In the past, the families of Batu's culture came together and used the runestones to close the pathways to other worlds, blocking the great powers from the world

The runestones were distributed amongst the families for safe-keeping but over time they forgot their original and true purpose, mythologising the stones themselves as holy artefacts.

The stones are aligned and linked to temples in sets of 3, presumably grouped along alignment lines. Not all temples lead to all paths and we don't know how many there are but we are assuming 6, 9 or 12.

The Evil Bitch lady Chimeg has already gained access to some paths, but not those linked to death.

The enemy collectively are now planning to re-open the pathways and bring back the great powers, but they may not all understand what a bad thing that will be for the world.

The enemy need all the runestones in order to achieve their plans so to hold even one would block them.
