2nd AGE TEXT PROVIDED BY THE GOVERNESS OF CASTLE LASTAR

Little did Fandor know when he stood on that moor

That he was betrayed by his kindred from Dor.

Not until the serpent came had he feared;

All he remembered was how Findor cheered

At the news of such a great wedding

As his house across the land was spreading.

Then the serpent Rantor came

Crying out and belching flame.

As it carried Fandor away

Rantor told him where his bride lay.

Fandor’s anger rose, his heart turned black

He drew his axe and struck Rantor’s back.

Once free to Bolgar Fandor fled

With heavy heart and fearful dread.

But Rantor told the evil eye

In which direction he did fly,

And as Fangor to Bolgar came

So did his and Frastor’s bane.

Interpretation

Fandor arranged a marriage with the house of Frastor to unite the Dwarfs, but was betrayed by his own kin (Findor). Rantor was Fandor’s steed, but when he told Fandor of what had happened the dwarf turned on him and fled to Frastor’s realm. But he was fleeing to his doom, and both he and the house of Frastor were destroyed by evil forces that ambushed them on his arrival.
