Stone

Stone is a common element and is mainly neutral in nature. It separates things, acting as a barrier - including between elements. It can thus be defensive and protective but can also be constricting and imprisoning. In some cases, the same stone serves both a positive and then later a negative purpose (eg a sanctuary becomes a prison).
