Pommel
Where is the Pommel?
(59) 904 - Lastar’s Pommel - The Keffendir dwarves discover the pommel when they open up the Dragorald. Not knowing what they had found, they trade it with the Drow at Nagrad. Inwe realises what it is and re-doubles her efforts to find more artefacts
About the Staff:
The Staff is owned by Kalasar in the 2nd Age, he is later killed by Ezolach, still in 2nd Age; so it is likely that the staff returned to the Prime in Iron Mountains/Ruby Mountains area. Erowin finds it and passes it to Ynis Widrin but is soon killed by Ezollach. The staff is taken by Orcus when he kills Ynis in Zem and it is then handed to Guerin.
The Claw is found in Kaled Zem by Mala of the Dwarves in the 5th Age. Interestingly, this is where Ynis fell in battle with Orcus (in the 3rd Age) and the Staff passed to Guerin.
From the Chronicle of The Iron Mountains:
Once the flames had subsided, we made our way into the room and took note of the carvings on the walls. To the West was the City of Calahar under siege by forces bearing Demogorgon's banner. To the South the same forces were at Minas Olga, and Demogorgon could be seen picking up people and throwing them into a river of souls. To the North there was a great gathering of Dwarves at Olga, who appeared to be celebrating. In their centre was a grinning depiciton of Fandor, descending some stairs and holding a parchment. To the East, Loki's face emerged from dark clouds and was staring at Fandor. Beneath Loki's face was another dwarf (Dor) leaning over with his arm around the neck of a red dragon. On the ceiling Kalasar and Andurin were shown looking at each other; Kalasar was holding out a five foot long staff, whilst Andurin had a furrowed brow and appeared concerned.
HISTORY OF THE 3rd AGE
825-829 Erowin, the first castellan of Sutur and son of Bavarik, constantly puts evil to the sword throughout the land. Eventually, he comes to Olga again, where he discovers Lastar’s staff; however, the pommel and the eagle’s foot are missing. Understanding little of its power he gives it to Ynis Wydrin to study. Ynis is a young half-elf druid and friend of Erowin’s son Imrahir. He realises that it is part of Lastar’s staff but knows little of its power.
Also in this room were carved images on the walls; to the North could be seen Erowin climbing Findor's Stair, wearing the 3-pointed crown with yellow gems. He was fighting his way through undead creatures to reach Olga. To the East, Erowin was shown kneeling before a chest and lifting from it a plain staff, examining it closely with obvious interest. To the South Erowin was seen being slain by the Lich, Ezollach, and his crown was being taken from his decapitated skull. To the West could be seen Orcus with the bedraggled figure of Daudrag before him, offering him a darkly glowing green ring; Orcus towered over him, but was offering his hand in friendship. The sarcophagus cover was carved in the shape of a Dwarf, and it was marked at the feet with the symbol of Andurin.
A Vision excerpt...
Lanzi gazes on a warrior, his armour clean and polished helmet under one arm. His face is young although his eyes tell a different story as they regard Lanzi with a mixture of happiness and curiosity. Part elf, the man is blonde, clean shaven and extremely handsome. The chest plate of his armour is painted with a rampant horse on a green background. He looks up and says, “There thou ist Ynis! My son tells me thou were stuck in the Marsh again.” “My Lord, you do tease…No, I was in Numenorea”, a second voice replies, coming from a young half-elf, dressed in green and umber, with long, flowing blond hair, keen green eyes and a small, thin-lipped mouth. “Although there is much to be done in the Marsh”, he continues. “Yes, yes…That is not why I have requested thy presence, we will get round to that soon. Look at this.” The warrior indicates Lanzi. “I believe that it was once the Great Mage’s staff, I found it deep within this Minas.” “My Lord, this will demand great study; who have you chosen for such an exalted task?” “Thou, Ynis… Thou.”
855-865 After years of searching, Imrahir’s forces discover Balor’s hiding place. Supported by Ynis Wydrin, each of the Sword Bearers unites in support of Garag’s wish to free his home. They descend upon Kaled Zem and, with the full might of their armies, they break into the labyrinth. After a lengthy siege and a tumultuous battle, the last of Demogorgon’s powerful demons is banished. Garag takes his Ring of Air back to Minas Emras. However, a young Demon, Gulak, smuggles away the Crown.
The House of Zem start to repopulate the mts from their home in Emras. At 60 Yosho Ishi, by now a renowned sage, discovers the shard he had been looking for. Aided by Garag’s folk and Ynis Wydrin he returns both Gems to Sutur. Here Ynis Wydrin discovers more of the staff’s power but realises that the eagles claw is required to bind the Gem and that there may be another part of the Staff missing. Ynis calls the staff Erowin’s Force in recognition of the Great Lord.
860-870 Having restored law to much of the land, and driven out Demogorgan’s evil forces, Imrahir discovers that Minas Aarda is occupied by Orcus. Having re-forged Bavarick’s sword and wearing both known parts of the Crown, Imrahir leads a large force up to the gates of the ancient Minas. Having not reckoned with the power of the Demon, assault upon assault is thrown back. The siege ends in disaster for Imrahir. Ynis Wydrin is killed during the battles and Lastar’s staff is delivered to Orcus.
Ynis's Death seen in a vision...
Lanzi is scared even before he is awake. Having opened the mighty door he is stunned by what he finds. Orcus stands before them and all seems lost. The shock is felt before Lanzi sees any movement – Orcus’s great hand grabs Ynis by the throat and hurls him upwards. Lanzi too has been launched and, rotating slowly end over end, he occasionally views the battle scene below. The Tana’Ri are routing men, elves and dwarves; however, Lanzi is most struck by the image of Ynis: once a beautiful half-elf, head ripped off and lifeless body cart wheeling across the room. Later Lanzi comes to, head still reeling, alone, petrified and with a booming voice in his ears, “Once again you honour me, we shall have complete control before this age is done.” “My Lord, it is by your grace that I have sufficient power to be of what little use I am.” Looking up, Lanzi can see the profile of a young man, dressed in a brown cloak, handsome and with neatly trimmed beard and moustache. The man addresses Orcus, (although the Demon is out of sight), “I believe that they will flee along the old paths in Kaled Zem; they will not get far.” “Good!” Exclaims the Demon, “Take this with you on your journey; I believe it to have once belonged to our most hated enemy.”
