Hintzu’s Visions

“Are you quite sure my darling?” a deep, slow, feminine voice carries soothingly to Hintzu’s ear. The tongue is elf, albeit arcane, but Hintzu understands it readily enough. “Yes” a man’s voice issues a slightly wary reply. Hintzu is in a room lit only by a glowing orb placed in the centre and perched on top of a pedestal. Pacing the mosaic floor near the orb is a woman dressed in a long black satin gown, tied at the waist with a purple girdle. The dress is low cut, revealing much of her ample white breasts. Her neck is long and rises to a smooth, elegant jaw line. Around her neck is a black satin choker with an image of Hel at the front, fashioned from platinum and jet. Her hair is tied up in a French plait on top of which is a beautifully ornate platinum tiara studded with black sapphires. Her face is pale but stunningly beautiful – full lips, painted black, large round eyes as deep as wells, sculptured eyebrows and a straight, strong nose which compliments her high cheek bones. “How did you do it?” she presses with a little more urgency, not yet convinced. “Well…” the voice cracks a little with laughter, “she had decided to travel with just a few of her closest advisors,” excited now, “and, as she led her horse towards the trees I struck!” A pause as if they are both savouring the moment – undressing the subject and delighting in every detail. He breaks the silence, “She felt it though… Oh yes, she twisted and turned, and how she screamed!” “What of her guards?” The female voice enquires feigning disinterest. “My men dispatched them; they were of no consequence and put up little fight. No, it was Lucielle that suffered the most.” These words are spoken with obvious glee. “How did you make her suffer?” the female is more interested now. “The knife was serrated and dripping with a serpent’s poison – the sort that incapacitates but takes a long time to kill. I plunged it into her back, to the right of her heart so as to prolong her death. She struggled and I thought that I had almost lost control so I brought my hand to her neck and squeezed hard enough to choke the air out of her. That stopped her struggling. You would have loved the way she sobbed, begged for mercy…Ha! Sylvan elves are so easy to kill…” “Now, now, my son… Do not get over confident, some of them are quite deadly. Anyway, did you get it?” “Oh yes; carefully, as you said I drew it from her dying grasp with the claw you gave me.” “Good, bring it to me quickly, I need to examine it more closely. Do not forget, Eolire, do not touch it!”

For the pre-first age history of the Stone see Unglak and the Stone

UPDATE - the shards were gems from off the Prime provided by Anubis to Lastar to contain the heartstone.

also read Shards and Planes

Anubis gave Lastar the gems that became the shards in order to bind and contain the heart of Ra, along with a falcon's claw to bind and control the newly created stone. The whole was placed in a staff in 3 parts (Pommel, Staff and Claw) that reflected the mythical sceptre of Ptah, the original creator god.

The Stone's home off the Prime was previously in the Abyss, with Orcus. If it has to go somewhere, then it should be there. However, Zeus has sent Athena to the Prime, charged with destroying the Stone. We don't yet know how she plans to do so and whether it has to be reformed first. It is also not clear whether destroying it is the right answer as it may unbalance things to much in favour of the Sword.

Retrieving the Stone is the fundamental reason that Orcus is on the Prime. He may well return to the Abyss if he retrieved it. Either way, his motivation to be on the Prime would certainly be lessened. Again, this is not a universally good thing as Orcus sits in opposition to Demogorgon, the only being on the Prime currently able to resist him. If Orcus left the Prime, then Demogorgon would be largely unchecked.

Stone was originally held by Orcus in the Abyss - mounted in his wand (which he made so as to control the Stone). It first enters the Prime via the natural gate at Zundar

Lastar made the staff to do the same. see Staves

The Sarnim Stone was the name given to a gem first found by the Gnomes and forcibly taken by the dwarves of Balem before coming to Lastar.

570E

Realising that Dispater would be even stronger on his own plane, Lastar builds another powerful artefact to help him defeat the Devil. The Sarnim Stone was a gem that Unglak’s father had discovered at the beginning of time. Using the Crowns and the Rings, and with the aid of Orodruin’s folk and his God, Anubis, Lastar gives the Sarnim Stone many magical powers. The Gem was born!!! To bear the Stone, Lastar makes a great staff in mockery of the Wand of Orcus. Lastar and Bavarik travel to the Abyss using the Pentogram at Zundar. Lastar uses all his combined powers, including the Rings, Staff and Sarnim Stone and the Wand of Orcus to kill Dispater. Bavarik returns to the Prime and tolls of Lastar’s glory. Lastar knows he cannot take artefacts with him to Anubis’ Divine House so, with the Wand of Orcus, he shatters the Sarnim Stone, breaks the Staff, separates the Crowns and scatters the Rings.(1st Age History)

Believed to be in The Glade (Summer):

What better place to keep it safe, the elf thought. It came from nature and should go back to it. It was part of a different world, of that he was certain, but it had such power over this one - the dwarves knew that. Yet, in its use it brought devastation. The contradiction was stark: the shard’s ability to heal all the wounds inflicted on the Prime compared to the total destruction it brought down upon its user. Occasionally, he knew, there had been those who understood what would happen to them but still chose to heal the world around them. How courageous they had been. Here it was hidden and guarded by powers beyond explanation – nature itself! Only those with sufficient understanding would know of this link between Planes and how to summon the ‘roots, trunk and limb’ of the Tree.

Yes, it should stay here, near the Tree and this wonderful creature who would secure it without even knowing or caring what it was. ‘It is certainly not safe with me,’ the elf’s thoughts broke into Fawn’s mind again, ‘not where I am to go’. The music changed subtly, taking on something a little darker, the notes more bass and resonate. ‘No, there is no easy path and I dare not leave you in that realm,’ the elf continued to think as his fingers slowed and the lyre’s now more discordant voice weaved its patterns. He knew that the Glade existed between worlds, between Planes – neither Prime, nor Ethereal, nor otherworldly. It existed everywhere and nowhere. ‘Yes, the shard would be safe here,’ he reaffirmed. Fawn saw the elf drop a small green stone into the pool to his left, barely altering the music to accommodate his movement. The Nymph stopped for a moment and looked at the concentric circles expanding across the deep, blue water. She smiled and danced again, slowly returning to the forest as if she knew all along the purpose of their encounter.

(73) 918 - 4th Age - Use of the Gem of Natural Wonder and the Fall of Minas Emras - Orcus Sieges Emras - Destrin, Mala’s General, in desperate defence of his Queen and people uses the Gem of Natural Wonder to defeat the Demon’s army as it scales the Mountain. The House of Zem finally falls as Emras is brought down by both Rantor and Dordraug assisting Orcus. Destrin is killed and Mala escapes with the Claw. The Gem is lost.
